With how deeply embedded Android has gotten with the smartphone and tablet market, it was only a matter of time before Android started making its way over to other electronic devices such as cameras. With hoardes of manufacturers running their stock software, Android brings some great functionality and new, innovative features.
Samsung is looking to make some waves with their Galaxy Camera announced at their Unpacked event today. Maybe I’m speaking out of thin air here, but it looks to be one of the first cameras of its kind. With a nice profile and smartphone sized screen on the back, it packs quite the punch.
  • 1/2.3″ BSI CMOS sensor with 16.3 megapixels
  • Can shoot full 1080p HD video
  • ISO 100-3200
  • 4.7 inch HD Super Clear Touch Display (308ppi)
  • 1.4GHZ Exynos quad-core processor
  • 8GB internal storage with MicroSD card slot
  • WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G, and 4G connectivity
  • A-GPS
  • HDMI out
  • 1650mAh battery with battery life reported up to 7 hours
  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
  • Frame weighs just 0.67 pounds
It’s kind of amusing to see a camera have Android 4.1 Jelly Bean when a lot of smartphones don’t even have it yet. The Galaxy Camera is a very interesting concept and will have access to the Play Store so apps that you can download on your phone can also be installed on the camera. With 3G and 4G connectivity, one will need a data plan through whichever carrier supports it which will be a first.
You can read the full press release here. No pricing details yet. if Samsung can get the pricing right, they could just have a winner on their hands.
