As you probably know, Google will host a press event in less than an hour in San Francisco, where the Mountain View-based company is expected to introduce Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and the next-gen Nexus 7 tablet. The Android 4.3 Jelly Bean launch event will be hosted by Sundar Pichai, head of Android and Chrome, but most important it will be streamed live on YouTube so all of you can watch it.

You know there is nothing I'd like to do more than trashing Apple, so here are some random thoughts I had about this year's WWDC... Enjoy!

Did you miss Google I/O keynote from yesterday? Since Google decided not to do a day 2 keynote, they packed everything into day 1, From Google+ to Chrome to Android and even Google Maps. The entire thing ended with a Q&A session with Larry Page which was a highlight for me.... I must say though, it was long…really long.

This shouldn’t surprise anyone. Last year, Google I/O tickets didn’t last very long, and this year they went just as fast. If you didn’t manage to snatch your $900 ticket up in under an hour, you were just out of luck. While it didn’t break the record for 23 minutes last year, it’s still pretty impressive. Did any of you manage to get a ticket? Let us know in the comments

#1 : Samsung Galaxy S4

The Samsung Galaxy S3 was arguably the biggest Android phone release to date, so it's hardly surprising that the inevitable S4 is leading the pack as one of the most anticipated phones of 2013. While details on the device remain strictly in rumor mill territory, the best guesses include a 5-inch 1080p HD display, a 13-megapixel camera, and integrated support for Visa wireless payments. But one thing we know for sure: we'll be getting all of the relevant details on March 14 at Manhattan's Radio City Music Hall.

Google has teamed up with a couple of big-name manufacturers to deliver a slew of successful Nexus devices to market, but one constant criticism of the series has been the underperformance of the camera. That all looks set to change, according to one Google executive, Vic Gundotra, who has promised the next line of Nexus smartphones will offer snappers which deliver crisper, altogether better shots by packing, in the words of the Google chief, “insanely great cameras.”

Kansas City became the envy of the technology-literate when Google announced that it would be bringing its affordable and lightning-fast Google Fiber to the city. Now, the world can eye New York with jealousy, as Google's brought free Wi-Fi to the Chelsea area. Much like Mountain View, Google is bringing free Wi-Fi to the city that houses its New York offices.

According to the company, the feature was originally intended to "allow users to opt-in to adding a useful extension to Chrome as a part of the installation of another application", but has been founded to be abused by third party software developers.

Google said that extensions have been distributed and installed without "proper acknowledgment from users", which was made possible via the Windows registry mechanism for extension deployment.

Google will no longer allow silent extension installs in Chrome.

Sure I am a fan of Google and Android, but putting that aside, Google puts together some of the best promo videos. Today’s Happy Holidays video from team Android is another one to throw into the mix. This one is set at Google headquarters during a holiday party when one employee notices a lonely bugdroid. He sets up various Nexus devices around him showing a Christmas tree, a snowfall, and a fireplace, along with a little holiday music. All of this sets the stage for a magical ending.

Apple has acquired a reputation for being overly-aggressive in taking its competitors to court over patents (as demonstrated by this awesome video called “Apple Kills Star Trek”). In fact, it was just a few months ago that Apple took Samsung to court and won a whopping $1 billion dollars for supposed patent infringements.

Google TV, one of Google’s less popular products. But yet there are still many users of Google TV out there. Some of the more popular models are the Vizio Costar and the Hisense Pulse (just announced days ago). Now LG is showing off a few new Google TV models that will hit the market next year. Before, LG only had a 47-inch and a 55-inch Google TV model. Starting next year LG will have a 42-inch, 50-inch and a 60-inch model to choose from. These new Google TV’s are also ultra-thin and use the Motorola Droid Razr M’s idea of edge-to-edge display. As you can see from the image above, there’s almost nothing but screen there.

Every year we think the evolution in smartphones must have finished. Every year we're wrong. Very wrong.

2012 saw quad-core processors become the norm among the high-end Android world, while Apple finally yielded in the screen size arms race by launching the taller, bigger iPhone 5.

Even Nokia broke a few boundaries with its high-spec imaging technology, sticking unbelievably powerful camera equipment in its latest phones, giving us access to mobile technology that even a couple of years ago would've seemed impossible.

So what can we expect to see in 2013? Will any maker be mad enough to launch a phone with an "octo-core" processor? Will Samsung expand the Galaxy Note's enormous screen by another inch or two, forcing trouser manufacturers the world over to expand pocket sizes accordingly?

Some things are guaranteed. There will be an iPhone update of some sort and Samsung will launch a few thousand differing Galaxy models, but what will be the big movers and publicity-grabbers of the 2013 smartphone scene?

Google launched its Nexus 4 earlier this morning in the US and the UK, and both the 16GB and 8GB models are now sold out. The two handsets flew off the shelves selling out in the UK and the US in less than an hour. Android World is also reporting that sales of the Nexus 4 in Belgium and the Netherlands were cancelled due to unexpected, overwhelming demand for the phone.

China blocked all Google web domains throughout the country for long periods on Friday, the search giant has said.

Google Search, Gmail, Google Drive and all other web products were largely blacked out and, in a statement to Bloomberg and Reuters, Google said it had "checked and there's nothing wrong on our end."

Amongst the many other additions that will be part of Android 4.2, it looks like keeping your device secure will be a priority as well. I know we don’t like the idea of malware on our Android devices, but the fact is, it’s out there. Google is looking to combat that in 4.2 by offering the option of scanning an application before it’s fully installed. Once the app is scanned, if it finds something suspicious within the app, it’ll then prompt you and inform you as such and give you the option to continue. Additionally, the scanner will block the installation completely if the fingerprint matches existing malware.
