Research in Motion (RIM) confirmed today that it will launch its BlackBerry 10 mobile operating system on January 30, as it aims to stem the flow of enterprises ditching BlackBerry phones and tablets for iOS devices.
Announcing the news via its official blog, the Canadian handset maker said that the operating system will run on two new smartphones to be announced on the same day, with the event to be shown “simultaneously” across the world.
Despite this news, it is not yet clear on when the new OS will come to the firm’s PlayBook tablets, or if this news could be followed up by a newer tablet running the new operating system. Previous rumors have indicated that RIM could launch a bigger PlayBook in the fall of 2013.
BB10 will bring about a number of improvements including an enhanced on-screen keyboard, better multi-tasking and a cascading user interface for looking through and switching between apps. Another useful enterprise feature is BlackBerry Balance, which allows users to maintain two user profiles on one device.
The operating system could well have a big part to play in the future of the company though (which has seen shares drop by more than 90% in four years), not least in getting an increasing numbers of app developers on-board.
RIM last month started accepting app submissions for BB10, which recently received FIPS 140-2 certification, but had at one point been expected to launch the software as late as March of next year.
