Yesterday Instagram updated their Terms of Service, and it would allow the company to sell user photos. Today, Instagram’s founder Kevin Systrom clarified the changes in a blog post on Instagram’s blog. Systrom informed all of us that photos users upload to Instagram are still the users and not the companys’ and that Instagram won’t be selling them to third-party services.

Our intention in updating the terms was to communicate that we’d like to experiment with innovative advertising that feels appropriate on Instagram. Instead it was interpreted by many that we were going to sell your photos to others without any compensation. This is not true and it is our mistake that this language is confusing. To be clear: it is not our intention to sell your photos. We are working on updated language in the terms to make sure this is clear.

That’s good news for Instagram users, but do we still trust Instagram’s parent company Facebook? Probably not. Most of us have moved away from Facebook, and on to newer social networks like Twitter and Google+. Instagram’s founder also stated that the company currently doesn’t have any plans to include pictures in any form of advertisement.

But of course that could change in the very near future. Systrom also stated that the company will remove any text from the new Terms of Service that may have alluded to them selling users photos. Although users should be expecting some form of advertising in the future, as Instagram needs a way to monetize their app and business. Systrom still says that Instagram is going to experiment with some innovative advertising.

So how many of you closed your Instagram accounts in the past 24 hours? Obviously it was enough of you to get Instagram to change their ToS very quickly. How many of you are surprised by this reversal of their Terms of Service just a day after they were changed? Let us know in the comments below.
