On Friday, Apple lost the title of the world’s most valuable publicly traded company to Exxon Mobil, after shedding 14.4 percent in share price – and over £50 billion in value – in just two days.

CEO Tim Cook shrugged off the news, and focused the attention of investors on the record results of the last quarter. “The only companies that report better quarters pump oil. I do not know about you all, but I do not want to work for those companies,” he told the audience at Apple’s Cupertino Campus.

As perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) is expected to hit its physical density limit at about 1 Tb per square inch, we are hearing about new and innovative ways how a technology that is in its core more than 40 years old can get another extension.

While the iPhone might be the most anticipated phone for a few people, in our neck of the woods, it’s all about Samsung. Mobile World Congress is right around the corner, about 4 weeks away, and as you’ve seen over the past few days, we’ve seen a ton of rumors of devices being announced there and shortly after.

Korean researchers have uncovered a process to create "a class of imprintable, bendable, and shape-conformable polymer electrolyte with excellent electrochemical performance in lithium battery system.", The material can be sprayed on electrodes and then baked with UV rays for about 30 minutes in order to create power units, which would provide a method considerably faster than the standard way of creating lithium-ion cells.

There wasn’t much in the mobile arena from Samsung at CES, but that should change at the upcoming Mobile World Congress. Samsung will be there and it is expected to announce a refreshed line of smartphones and tablets. According to a report in Sammobile, one device on tap may be the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0.

February is always the most exciting month of the year for mobile phone fans, as it's when the entire phone industry has a big, boozy party somewhere in Europe and shows off the new phones and tablets it'll be launching over the spring and summer.

When it comes to mobile chips, Huawei is dead serious to design its own gear. And while we did see some of their devices being delayed because they used the current quad-core K3V2, that won’t stop the company from pursuing chip designs in the future. Quite the contrary, Huawei is already working on the successor, which will be unveiled at some point in the second half of this year. Dubbed HiSilicon K3V3, it will be based on the more powerful Cortex-A15 ARM architecture rather than Cortex-A9.

At CES 2013, LG Electronics didn't have a mere booth; it had its own little entertainment universe packed full of HDTVs, smartphones and more. One of the company's more popular attractions was its curved OLED panel. LG even "enhanced" the curvature of the display's form factor by lining three units side-by-side, thus creating a very wide arc. Clever.

Kansas City became the envy of the technology-literate when Google announced that it would be bringing its affordable and lightning-fast Google Fiber to the city. Now, the world can eye New York with jealousy, as Google's brought free Wi-Fi to the Chelsea area. Much like Mountain View, Google is bringing free Wi-Fi to the city that houses its New York offices.

If there are only three known truths in the universe, it's that (1) we must die, (2) we must pay taxes and (3) the PC platform will never die. But Panasonic is seemingly trying to prove the third truth wrong at CES 2013 in Las Vegas with a very interesting prototype: a 20-inch 4K tablet. If anything, it may kill off the AIOs, at least.

Sometimes, nothing gets tasks done quicker than having more than one display on the go. A multi-monitor setup means you can write a document on one screen while reading an important spec sheet on the other. I won't even get into the benefits of multi-screens in PC gaming.

It’s officially day 2 of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Samsung already had a keynote on Monday where they announced that the Galaxy Note 10.1 would be heading to Verizon with a huge logo of course, along with some camera, and other appliance announcements. Now Samsung has gotten up on stage for their second keynote. The smartphone manufacturing giant has just announced their new Exynos 5 Octa chip, which is based on the ARM big.LITTLE/Cortex A15 architecture. This new chip is designed to be a low powered, high performance mobile processor. Samsung is claiming that the 3D gaming performance is twice that of anything available right now. Dr. Woo gave a demonstration on stage which showed him searching for restaurants and watching an HD movie while singing the virtues of its extremely fast performance and power sipping capabilities.

As Samsung improves its cellphones by adding proper cameras, so it is tweaking its cameras to make them more like pocket computers. The new mirrorless flagship NX300 adds better Wi-Fi connectivity and a massive 3.3-inch, 768,000-dot 16:9 touchscreen.

It seems Samsung hasn’t forgotten about its Galaxy S II users just yet. Today, Samsung Korea posted details to its website regarding an Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy S II (it seems to be for the Korean version only for now, but that means the international update should be just around the corner).

Samsung seem to be getting their CES announcements in before CES actually happens, they have announced two devices in its Series 7 line of notebook. Both have 1920×1080 full HD displays with the option of full screen 10 finger multi-touch, which I am coming to the conclusion is an essential feature for Windows 8. The Ultra has an 8 hour battery life and the Chronos has 11 hours battery. Both look like very nice devices but there are no price details yet, I will get more details about them next week during the show, but for now here's what we know:

Apple was supposed to have won big in the suit against Samsung in a massive series of claims of patent infringement. This was the apparent result of a jury verdict last August in which there were charges of attorney misconduct, juror misconduct and trial errors before the ink was dry on the decision.

This past year has been a great year for gaming in general – just ask any of your “gamer” friends and they’ll tell you so. I’d consider myself a big gamer as well and while I play more on the PC and the PS3 than I do on the mobile side of things, there’s no denying that 2012 has been a big year for gaming all over the place and not just on the console/PC side of things. Android is becoming more and more of a force in the mobile gaming world and I’m sure that there is only more to come in 2013.

We’ve heard so much about this device, that we could probably write a book about it. The Sony Yuga has been in the rumor mill for quite a while now. It’s also been named the Sony Xperia Z now, and we should see it at CES. Now the latest rumor is telling us that the Xperia Z will be launching one week after CES. That might be the fastest launch for a device shown off at CES ever. The Consumer Electronics Show will be taking place January 8th to the 11th in Las Vegas, and we expect to see plenty from Sony, Huawei, ZTE and others that are trying to get their foot in the door of the US market.

Back in October we’ve told you about the Samsung GT-N5100, which at that time got its DLNA certification. Now such a device popped up at GLBenchmark’s website revealing us it could be Sammy’s next Note device. From what we’ve understood, this will be a 7-inch tablet with screen resolution of 1280×800 pixels a la Nexus 7. In addition, it will use Samsung’s own Exynos 4412 quad-core processor clocked at 1.6GHz, while Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean will run the show.
