The Nokia Lumia 920 was unveiled yesterday with the backing of Microsoft whose CEO, Steve Ballmer, flew all the way from Seattle to lend his support to Stephen Elop. The Samsung Ativ S was presented at IFA last week in Berlin. Neither of the phones have an estimated time of delivery although it is certain that it will be in the fourth quarter of the year. There are some similarities due to the restrictions imposed by Microsoft but read on to find out how they fare against each other.
Size and Weight
The Ativ S measures 137.2 x 70.5 x 8.7mm and weighs 135g. The Lumia 920 is 130.3 x 70.8 x 10.7mm and weighs 185g. The Lumia 920 is shorter than the Ativ S, significantly thicker and is way heavier. Whether this is a minus is wholly subjective since some might prefer a “reassuringly heavy” object rather than a “surprisingly light” one... Winner: Samsung Ativ S
Display
The Ativ S has a 4.8in HD Super AMOLED display, the same as the Samsung Galaxy S3. This means that it has a screen resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels (or an aspect ratio of 16:9). That’s a pixel density of 305ppi. Nokia on the other side has a 4.5in PureMotion HD+ display which uses IPS technology and has a screen resolution of 1,280 x 768 pixels (a rather uncommon 5:3 aspect ratio). The company claims that the screen is not only brighter but also displays deeper blacks and has a much higher refresh rate than the competition – including the Galaxy S3. The Lumia 920 beats both the iPhone 4GS and the Ativ S with a pixel density of 331ppi (although it fails to beat the Xperia S). Another small but still significant advantage the Lumia has over the Ativ is the ability to use the screen with gloves... Winner: Nokia Lumia 920
Storage and Memory
The Nokia Lumia 920 has 1GB of RAM, 7GB of cloud storage thanks to Skydrive (which strictly speaking is not true because existing users don’t get an additional 7GB allowance) and 32GB onboard storage. The Ativ S has 1GB of RAM, either 16GB or 32GB of storage plus, surprise, surprise, a microSD card slot and the ubiquitous 7GB Skydrive “free” storage... Winner: Tie
Processor
Expect a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 system-on-chip on both (as well as so many other handsets). This is a dual-core model that features an Adreno 225 GPU, a clock speed of 1.5GHz and an LTE modem... Winner: Tie
Software
Ditto here. Both will run on Windows Phone 8 without any proprietary user interface. Both companies however are likely to bundle their own applications. Nokia for example will add City Lens, Drive, Music... Winner: Tie
Camera
The Ativ S comes with a 1.9-megapixel front facing camera and an 8-megapixel rear one. The Lumia 920 features a 1.2-megapixel front facing camera and an 8.7-megapixel rear model. Both do full HD video recording. The Lumia 920 however adds a few aces to its imaging feature; there’s the Carl Zeiss optics, a bigger aperture which can capture up to 10x more light compared to competitors and an advanced optical image stabilization system... Winner: Nokia Lumia 920
Battery
Here also the Lumia offers a notable advantage, the ability to recharge wirelessly using Qi technology from the Wireless Power Consortium (which competes against Qualcomm’s own WiPower). The Ativ S though has a bigger 2,300mAh battery compared to 2,000 for Nokia’s... Winner: Samsung Ativ S
Connectivity
Both offer NFC, Bluetooth, USB, Wi-Fi as well as LTE. No surprises here... Winner: Tie
Pricing
Unknown at this stage. Likely to be around £500 SIM Free at launch.
Conclusion:
If you are actually willing to pay for a Windows Phone 8 device over other Android and iOS devices, it comes down to these two Microsoft powered bad boys, So both phones have the same software, processors, memory and both phones are almost the same size but the Nokia with a slightly better camera and a display with a bit higher density and Samsung with a Bigger screen and a bigger battery... the choice is yours.
