According to the company, the feature was originally intended to "allow users to opt-in to adding a useful extension to Chrome as a part of the installation of another application", but has been founded to be abused by third party software developers.

Google said that extensions have been distributed and installed without "proper acknowledgment from users", which was made possible via the Windows registry mechanism for extension deployment.

Google will no longer allow silent extension installs in Chrome.

Samsung does a great job with its commercials and the latest one for the Note 2 is no exception. Titled Office Upgrade, the 1-minute advertisement showcases the Note II in a work environment. It is filled with your typical office banter between two co-workers who are equipped with Note II handsets. One is using the phone to draw pictures and goof off, while the other is processing the quarterly earnings report. You’ll have to watch the clip to see how the slacker gets her just reward in the end.

Samsung’s "phablet" Galaxy Note series has proved a surprise hit with consumers, and with the second iteration boasting one of the largest displays in the smartphone industry, its successor – according to a report from Samsung’s native South Korea – will set a new benchmark in terms of screen real-estate. The Note II may already be enormous with its 5.5-inch offering, but as TheKoreaTimes reports, the Galaxy Note III could boast an eye-watering 6.3-inch display upon its release next year.

While we've seen more than our fair share of photos of the full-touch BlackBerry Z10, the full QWERTY N-Series model has eluded the camera for quite some time. We've seen some photos here and there, but today we have a great shot that show off the device in full glory.

Sure I am a fan of Google and Android, but putting that aside, Google puts together some of the best promo videos. Today’s Happy Holidays video from team Android is another one to throw into the mix. This one is set at Google headquarters during a holiday party when one employee notices a lonely bugdroid. He sets up various Nexus devices around him showing a Christmas tree, a snowfall, and a fireplace, along with a little holiday music. All of this sets the stage for a magical ending.

Apple has acquired a reputation for being overly-aggressive in taking its competitors to court over patents (as demonstrated by this awesome video called “Apple Kills Star Trek”). In fact, it was just a few months ago that Apple took Samsung to court and won a whopping $1 billion dollars for supposed patent infringements.

Google TV, one of Google’s less popular products. But yet there are still many users of Google TV out there. Some of the more popular models are the Vizio Costar and the Hisense Pulse (just announced days ago). Now LG is showing off a few new Google TV models that will hit the market next year. Before, LG only had a 47-inch and a 55-inch Google TV model. Starting next year LG will have a 42-inch, 50-inch and a 60-inch model to choose from. These new Google TV’s are also ultra-thin and use the Motorola Droid Razr M’s idea of edge-to-edge display. As you can see from the image above, there’s almost nothing but screen there.

In 2011, Samsung introduced the world to the Samsung Galaxy Note. It was a 5.3-inch device with a stylus, known as the S Pen. Now fast forward to Late-August 2012, just before IFA in Berlin. Samsung held their Unpacked event and introduced to us the Galaxy Camera and the Galaxy Note 2. The Galaxy Note 2 features a 5.5-inch display, Android 4.1, 2GB of RAM, and powered by their Exynos 4412 Quad-core processor which is clocked at 1.6GHz. So this thing is a beast.

Every year we think the evolution in smartphones must have finished. Every year we're wrong. Very wrong.

2012 saw quad-core processors become the norm among the high-end Android world, while Apple finally yielded in the screen size arms race by launching the taller, bigger iPhone 5.

Even Nokia broke a few boundaries with its high-spec imaging technology, sticking unbelievably powerful camera equipment in its latest phones, giving us access to mobile technology that even a couple of years ago would've seemed impossible.

So what can we expect to see in 2013? Will any maker be mad enough to launch a phone with an "octo-core" processor? Will Samsung expand the Galaxy Note's enormous screen by another inch or two, forcing trouser manufacturers the world over to expand pocket sizes accordingly?

Some things are guaranteed. There will be an iPhone update of some sort and Samsung will launch a few thousand differing Galaxy models, but what will be the big movers and publicity-grabbers of the 2013 smartphone scene?

Faced with a potentially devastating backlash from users, Instagram has completely distanced itself from any hint it would sell users photos to advertisers without first gaining permission.

Earlier this week, a change to the Instagram terms and conditions sparked outrage, as it said users would have to “agree that a business may pay Instagram to display your photos in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions without any compensation to you”.

Yesterday Instagram updated their Terms of Service, and it would allow the company to sell user photos. Today, Instagram’s founder Kevin Systrom clarified the changes in a blog post on Instagram’s blog. Systrom informed all of us that photos users upload to Instagram are still the users and not the companys’ and that Instagram won’t be selling them to third-party services.
